Playaways
A Playaway is an MP3 player about half the size of a deck of cards which holds an entire audiobook. Each unit has simple buttons to easily navigate back and forth through chapters and allows the listener to control the speed of the narrator's voice and automatically bookmark the place they left off after powering down. A universal headphone jack allows customers to use any headphones, speakers or car adapters for listening. Rockford Public Library’s Playaway collection is available at the Main Library, East and Rockton Centre Branch libraries. Headphones are available for purchase at each location and additional Playaway accessories are available at www.playaway.com.

Freegal Downloadable Music
Freegal is a service that offers music for free, legal (thus the name Freegal) download. Rockford Public Library has subscribed to the service which allows RPL cardholders to download up to 6 songs per week. Six downloads are available per week, and customers exceeding the weekly limit can add tracks to their wish list to download the next week. The files are downloaded in an MP3 format, and can then be played, transferred or burned onto a CD. The site contains thousands of artists, tens of thousands of albums and hundreds of thousands of songs, all owned by Sony Music Entertainment.
